China is moving toward the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with significantly improved performance after 2015, according to a newly-released report. The report - "Big Earth Data in Support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" - was released during the Sustainable Development Forum 2021. Guo Huadong is the director of the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He said that China is moving toward the 2030 SDGs with greatly improved indicators included in the evaluation, especially after 2015.

On September 28, 2021, CBAS held a press conference to introduce the report Big Earth Data in Support of the Sustainable Development Goals (2021) released on September 26 by China at the Sustainable Development Forum 2021. It is the third straight year since 2019 that China has released a report in the series by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Organized by CAS, the report was drafted by a research team from CBAS as well as the Big Earth Data Science Engineering Program (CASEarth).

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a virtual public workshop, "Data-Informed Societies Achieving Sustainability: Tasks for the Global Scientific, Engineering, and Medical Communities", on September 9 and 10. The workshop explored how the global scientific, engineering, and medical communities can use data to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The workshop also discussed crosscutting issues, such as engaging the scientific, engineering, and medical communities in the post-2030 agenda on data-related issues, addressing disparities in the ability of societies to utilize data, and highlighting insights from the global experience with the COVID-19 pandemic.

From September 6 to 7, 2021, the 5th Digital Belt and Road Conference (DBAR 2021) was successfully held in Beijing. The conference was hosted by the Digital Belt and Road Program (DBAR), co-organized by CBAS and the Big Earth Data Science Engineering Program (CASEarth). More than 320 experts from over 50 countries joined this event physically and virtually.

President Xi Jinping called on Monday on the international community to take advantage of scientific innovation and big data to overcome key obstacles in fulfilling the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Xi made the remark in a congratulatory letter to the inauguration ceremony of the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals and the International Forum on Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals in Beijing. The research center was pledged by Xi during his speech at the General Debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly last year. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the restoration of China's lawful seat in the UN. In 2015, the UN adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 sustainable development goals, ranging from ending poverty to tackling climate change. In the letter, Xi said the agenda has provided clear objectives for international development and cooperation.
