The Academy of Sciences of BRICS countries – China, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and India – has held an online forum from April 26 to 27 to share big data about sustainable development.

The BRICS Forum on Big Data for Sustainable Development was held in Beijing both online and offline from 26-27 April, 2022. The forum was proposed by China during the speech of Chinese President Xi Jinping at the 13th BRICS Summit last year entitled “Advance BRICS Cooperation to Meet Common Challenges Together”.

Mr. Han Qunli, Professor of CBAS and Chair of the SDG Working Group for Big Earth Data Science Engineering Program (CASEarth), was invited by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) to give a talk at its Global Network Webinar. The Webinar was organized to introduce CBAS and its work in supporting data and statistical processes to facilitate the implementation of SDGs to the broader statistical community at large.

On March 31, experts from the Digital Belt and Road Program (DBAR) and Pan-Eurasian Experiment Program (PEEX) held an online meeting on “coordinated, comprehensive, long-term in situ components of land-atmosphere measurements for complementing space borne Earth observation”.

Mr. Siddharth Chatterjee and Dr. Stephen Bainous Kargbo of the United Nations (UN) paid a visit to CBAS on January 7 to formally meet with CBAS officials and tour the SDG Big Data Platform. Mr. Chatterjee is the UN Resident Coordinator in China and Dr. Kargbo is the UN Industrial Development Organization's representative to China. They were given a warm welcome by Guo Huadong, Director General of CBAS, who stressed in his introduction that CBAS is committed to building a public big data science and technology platform in service of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

BEIJING, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's recently launched Earth science satellite has sent back its first remote sensing images, according to its developer, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Using thermal infrared, low light level and multispectral imagers, the satellite captured images of multiple cities and regions, including Beijing, Shanghai, the Yangtze River Delta, Lake Namtso in Tibet, Aksu Prefecture in Xinjiang, and Paris in France. The satellite SDGSAT-1 is the world's first space science satellite dedicated to serving the U.N. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
