From September 7 to 9, 2022, the 6th Digital Belt and Road Conference (DBAR 2022) was successfully held in Beijing. The conference was hosted by the Digital Belt and Road Program (DBAR), co-organized by CBAS and the Big Earth Data Science Engineering Program (CASEarth). Nearly 200 experts from China and abroad joined this event.

The theme of DBAR 2022 is a "Digital Sustainable Future" and more than 70 presentations were delivered in 12 sessions, focusing on 9 topics: Agricultural Monitoring and Food Security, Management of Coast and Sea, Environmental Change Assessment, Heritage Conservation, Urban Sustainability, Climate Action in High Mountain Asia and Arctic Regions, Water and Land Management, Data Sharing and Disaster Risk Reduction.

DBAR 2022 highlights the rapidly growing importance of digital technologies, the UN's efforts towards improving Global Digital Cooperation, and the need to emphasize the potential of big data and digital technologies for global implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These global developments provide new opportunities for DBAR to participate in this global effort to improve digital cooperation and utilize Big Earth Data to develop new digital information products to support and ensure informed policies in attaining the SDGs in Belt and Road Initiative countries and regions. Participants also addresses the importance of big data and innovation in implementing SDGs. The digital divide, as one of the major challenges in the implementation of the Agenda, has limited the comprehensive understanding of critical interactions among different SDGs. Filling in the divide can help develop informed implementation strategies and allocate needed resources in accelerating the progress towards sustainability.

Guo Huadong, Director General of CBAS and Chair of DBAR chaired the DBAR Science Team Meeting and the Science Committee Meeting. He delivered opening remarks by highlighting new opportunities and needs to enhance DBAR outreach and productivity. With 7 years left for the Agenda, achievements made have been seriously affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. With data resources of CBAS and CASEarth, DBAR will continue to share digital technologies to serve the sustainable development for Belt and Road countries and regions.

DBAR Working Groups and International Centers of Excellence(ICoEs) presented their progress during the past year and plans of action for 2023. As an important annual event, the series of Digital Belt and Road Conference has brought together international scientists and stakeholders.
